Honing uses abrasives to create a smooth matte or satin finish, while polishing refines the surface toward a higher sheen. An impregnating sealer may reduce absorption and improve stain resistance, but it does not prevent etching, scratches, wear, or every stain. Some stones may not need sealing, so the material should be assessed first.
