Not every mark on stone is the same, so treatment depends on what actually happened to the surface. A stain is absorbed discoloration within the stone and its treatment depends on the source. An etch is surface damage caused by a chemical reaction, often leaving a dull spot or changed texture, and it is corrected through appropriate refinishing rather than stain treatment. For example, marble floor polishing can refine a dull or worn finish. Countertop etch correction, stain removal, chip repair, and scratch removal address different types of surface damage.
That refinishing may involve honing or polishing, depending on the stone and the desired result. Honing uses abrasives to create a smooth matte or satin finish, while polishing further refines the surface toward a higher sheen. An impregnating sealer may reduce absorption and improve stain resistance, but it does not prevent etching, scratches, wear, or every stain, and some stones may not require sealing at all.
