It is surface damage caused by a chemical reaction, and it is typically corrected through refinishing steps such as honing and polishing. For example, marble floor polishing can refine a dull or worn finish. Countertop etch correction, stain removal, chip repair, and scratch removal address different types of surface damage.
Honing uses abrasives to create a smooth matte or satin finish. Polishing refines that surface toward a higher sheen. An impregnating sealer may reduce absorption and improve stain resistance, but it does not stop etching, scratches, wear, or every stain, and some stones may not need sealing at all.
